PRIVACY NOTICE – Welsh Government – Diaspora Engagement


The Welsh Government’s International Relations team is responsible for the delivery of the Welsh Government’s International Strategy. A key aim within that strategy was to engage with and mobilise the Welsh diaspora. A key part of this work includes collecting a limited amount of personal data, via a third party, from the Welsh diaspora. If you consent, Welsh Government will use your contact details to share information with you relating to the areas in which you have expressed an interest.

Upon collection, the data controller will be a third party contracted by the Welsh Government. The data will be transferred over to the Welsh Government at the end of the contract, at which point the Welsh Government will become the data controller. Once transferred to the Welsh Government, the data will only be accessed by officials with an interest in engaging with the Welsh diaspora.

The lawful basis for collecting this information under Article 4(11) of the General Data Protection Regulations. “Consent’ of the data subject means any freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous indication of the data subject’s wishes by which he or she, by a statement or by a clear affirmative action, signifies agreement to the processing of personal data relating to him or her.

What do we do with your information?

The Welsh Government uses the information received for the below purposes.

  • Promote/advertise relevant content/information.
  • Issue invitations to virtual and physical events.
  • Encourage participation in campaigns and initiatives led by Welsh Government and our partners.

Who do we share your information with?

  • Information will only be shared with departments with the Welsh Government and with key stakeholders relevant to the diaspora’s areas of interest.
  • Any information provided is stored on a secure XXXXX.

Your rights in relation to your information

You have the right to:

  • Access to the Personal data that we are processing about you;
  • require us to rectify inaccuracies in that data;
  • The right (in certain circumstances) to object to processing;
  • The right for your data to be ‘erased’ (where consent is the lawful basis);
  • lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) who is our independent regulator for data protection.
