BAUER Family History
This interesting and long-established surname is of early medieval German origin, and is either a status name for a small farmer or a nickname meaning "neighbour, fellow citizen". The derivation is from the German "Bauer" (Middle High German, "(ge)bur"), ultimately from the Old High German "giburo". The Middle High German word denoted an occupier of a bur, a small dwelling or cottage; hence, "neighbour, fellow citizen", but this word later fell together with the Middle High German "buwaeere", an agent noun from the Old High German "buan", to cultivate (the land), thereby denoting a peasant farmer, one who depends on either cottage industry or agricultural labour as a means of subsistence.Select Audience

Chris Bouwer
Hi again, forgot to mention, it is made out as a fact that all Bouwer named people in South Africa is descendants of Jan Ludwig Bauer, arrived in 1724
Regards
Chris Bouwer
My name is Chris Bouwer and South African, I am born as an descendant from Jan Ludwig Bauer from Kassel Germany. Jan Ludwig arrived in the Cape Colony in 1724, married a Barnard and had 11 children.
I would like to learn about Jan Ludwig and under what circumstances he left Germany. What was his family occupation.
The name change from Bauer to Bouwer is picked up with his children, perhaps a judgment from authorities then in the Cape being Dutch as Bouwer is name from Holland.
Regards
