FALLON Family History
This interesting name has two possible origin, the first being that it is a variant of the English name "Fuller", from the Old English pre 7th Century "fullere", a name given to "a dresser of cloth". The second possible origin is Irish, from the Anglicized form of the Gaelic "O' Fallamhain", a descendant of Fallamhan, which was a byname meaning "leader", from "follamhnas, supremacy. Fuller is first recorded in 1219 (Assize Rolls, Yorkshire) as Roger Fulur, and Fallon, although a common name in Ireland, was not recorded there until 1585 (Dysart, Athlone, County Roscommon). The surname can be found as Fallon, O' Fallon, O' Fallo(w)ne, Fal(l)oon and Fallen, and can also be found as Hallon, from the Gaelic O' Fhallamhain...Select Audience

Katrine, I am the great-great grandson of High Constable Luke Fallon born 1817 in Athlone, Ireland and died in 1879 in Montreal. He served in the British Royal Navy and gained the rank to sergeant before retiring. He raised a family in Harbour Grace, NL. There he joined the constabulary.

My great-grandmother Jennie Fallon, b. 3 Nov 1865, Webster County, Iowa, USA, d. 7 Apr 1936; daughter of Samuel Fallon, b. 14 Mar 1838, Mooers, Clinton, New York, USA & Mary Reedy, b. 08 Mar 1841, County Limerick, Ireland. Samuel's parents were father Charles Fallon, b. 6 Sep 1805, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, & Mary Ann Fallon, b. 1810, Northern Ireland. Don't know Charles' parents, but Mary Ann was daughter to William John Faloon, b. 1785, Aghagallon Parish, County Antrim of North Ireland, & Elizabeth "Betsey" Stewart, b. 1785, Blair Athol, Perthshire, Scotland. From Weir Family Story, Ancestry.com: "William John Falloon and his wife Betsey Stewart were born and lived in Ireland. William was killed by Catholics while living in Ireland and is buried there. The story of his death as written in the Cleland genealogy is as follows: 'William was killed in a strife between Catholics and the Orangemen that was taking place at the time. He owned an Inn in Ireland; one day some men entered and asked for drinks. He told them he had none. They hit him on the head with a black thorn jack. His last words were, โIf you have no mercy on me, have mercy on my family.' โ

My great-great grandfather John Falloon born c 1813 was supposedly the "drunken son of an Irish squire in County Antrim, Northern Ireland." He emigrated to Canada, possibly in the early 1830s, and settled in Grenville Township, County Argenteuil, Quebec, on the Ottawa River. His son was called Samuel. I do not know his parents name, although his father's may have been Samuel. Do you, or does anyone, see a connection? I do not have any other information.

Only that your ancestor constable โJohnโ was actually named LUKE (as was his son and, according to your description, grandson). The constable Luke Fallon was retired 1st Royal Scots Regiment military.
He was born in County Westmeath, Athlone Ireland on the Shannon River just south of Lough Ree.

Hi everyone searching for the origin of John Bryant Fallon according to his marriage certificate 1862 he was born in 1836 where is the question.
One of the stories from folklore is he jumped ship in Western Australia whether he was a seaman or passenger is not known & he does not appear on immigration records as with many other steerage passengers in the 1850s

Hi, fellow Fallons,
My father was Lewis Fallon, born in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, in 1928, lived most of his life in Montreal, Quebec, son of Luke A. Fallon who was the son of Constable John Fallon from somewhere in Ireland. Luke Fallon had 3 other sons, Raymond of St-John's, Newfoundland, Eric, of Harbour Grace, and Reginald of Gander, Newfoundland. That's as far back as I go. Does anyone have more information about the Irish branch of the family, please? Thanks.
