FLOOD Family History
This interesting surname with variant spellings Flood, Floud, Fludd, Flude, Floyd, Floyde, Floyed, etc. is either an English topographical name for someone who lived by a small stream or an intermittent spring, deriving from the Old English pre 7th Century "flod(e)", from "flowan" meaning "to flow", or, it is a dialectal variant of the welsh name Lloyd, a nickname for a person with grey hair or who habitually dressed in grey, from the Welsh "Llwyd" "grey". The surname dates back to the late 12th Century, (see below). Further recordings include one Roger Flod (circa 1200) "Documents illustrative of the Social and Economic History of the Danelaw", and John de la Flode (1273) "The Hundred Rolls of Hampshire"...Select Audience

Sir James McCann
Margaret Flood
Iโd like to know about my Flood side of the family. I know FLOOD can be an English name too but as far as I know my dad always said he was of 100% Irish blood and since his mom was definitely born in County Kerry Iโm assuming his dad had at least one parent who was born in Ireland too. My paternal GGPโs were Joseph Flood ( b. In the 1840โs) and Margaret MacDonald. She was born in NYC I think in the 1840โs but his ( my PATERNAL GGF) dad may have born in Ireland or perhaps England.( one census from 1910 states that my GF stated that father JOSEPH was born there) I know many Irish people emigrated to England too but Iโm assuming he felt he was an Irishman not an Englishman.
