HARTY Family HistoryThis name, with variant spelling Harty and Hearty, is of Irish origin, and is an Anglicized form of the Gaelic "O'hA(tha)rtaight", meaning "descendant of Faghartach", from the prefix "O", meaning "grandson or male descendant of", and "Faghartach", a byname for a noisy person. Traditionally, Irish family names are taken from the heads of tribes, revered elders, or from some illustrious warrior, and are usually prefixed by "O", as above, or "Mac", denoting "son of". The older form of this name was O'Haherty, a phonetic Anglicization of O'hAthartaigh. The elimination of the internal "h" is rare in the Gaelic form, however, this occurs in this case; O'hAthartaigh has been abbreviated to O'Hartaigh or O'Harta, whence Harty...
