KIRBY Family History

Recorded in many spelling forms including: Cerby, Cirby, Curby, Cerbee, Kirby, Kirkby, Kirkebye, Kerbey, Kerby, and Kurby this is an English surname. It is of locational origin from one of the numerous places named Kirby or Kirkby, as for example, Kirby le Soken in the county of Essex; Kirby Cane in Norfolk; Monks Kerby in Warwickshire; Kirby Hill in the North Riding of Yorkshire; Kirkby on Bain in Lincolnshire; and Kirkby Lonsdale, in Westmorland. These places, recorded variously as Chirchebi, Kerkeby and Kirchebi in the famous Domesday book of 1086 for the above counties, derive from the Northern Middle English word "kirk", meaning a church and ultimately from the Olde Norse word "kirkja," with "byr", a farm...

I am researching John Kirby born c 1792 and his wife Catherine nee Field born c 1794. They had 5 children and I have located each of their baptisms in various RC churches in Dublin and one in Waterford City. But I cannot locate John's baptism nor that of Catherine nor their marriage c 1813-1814 as their first child Richard was baptised on 9 March 1815 in Dublin. Catherine's sister Mary Field was married to Professor Thomas James Mulvany, the famous Irish painter. John and Catherine moved to Waterford City in 1826 where he was the Proprietor of a haberdashery store. The family emigrated to South Australia, Australia, in 1839. I would love to hear any info on this Kirby or Field family.

My great great grandfather, Edward Francis Kerby, retired naval Captain of the Royal Navy Training Ship Gibraltar. His son Frank Miller Kerby, born in Belfast Northern Ireland, mother Jane Kerby (formerly Jane Stretch) settled in South Africa.
